ompA: outer membrane protein 3a

OmpA is believed to be a porin, a class of nonspecific diffusion channel that allows small solutes to pass through the outer membrane. It is also believed to stabilize cellular shape.

Contrary to the theme of our other parts being used to increase biofilm formation, ompA has actually been shown to decrease biofilm formation by repressing the expression of cellulose, a biofilm component.

OmpA deletions display sticky colony morphology as a result of excess cellulose being produced.
